Luna: A Next-Generation Volto & Plone Distribution for Building Consumer Websites (Website Builder)
Integrator
Intermediate
Luna is an open-source Volto & Plone distribution that redefines how modern websites are created — bringing visual design, flexibility, and accessibility to small businesses, creators, and institutions. By combining the robustness of Plone with the ease of a visual website builder, Luna empowers users to design unique, modern websites without writing code. It introduces a section-based architecture that replaces rigid predefined blocks, offering a modular and design-oriented approach. Luna’s mission is to bring Plone community closer to the consumer web, making open-source technology more approachable, visual, and ready for the next generation of web creators.

Details

Developed as part of a bachelor’s thesis, Luna represents a step toward transforming Volto & Plone into a fully open-source website builder distribution and, in the near future, a SaaS platform (Luna Sites).

This initiative aims to make open-source website creation accessible to everyone through a friendly, plug-and-play experience — while keeping the power and security of the Plone ecosystem.

Luna will be available in two main versions:

  • Open source distribution — for developers and institutions who want full control.

  • Cloud-based SaaS version (Luna Sites) — designed for consumers, freelancers, and small businesses who want to build websites easily and visually.

Key features include:

  • A marketplace for open-source templates and add-ons (booking, scheduling, e-commerce, etc.).

  • Simplified backends such as Nick or Guillotina to ensure scalability and lightweight deployment.

  • A visual section editor and through-the-web customization for fast, design-driven development.

By combining open-source collaboration with SaaS accessibility, Luna aims to build a bridge between the developer community and everyday users — expanding Plone’s presence beyond institutional websites into the modern consumer web.
